Classroom noise monitor tips: using it without nagging
- Agree on the limit with the class first, then let the meter do the reminding.
- Count the “too loud” alerts in a work block and set a goal for the next one.
- Lower the limit for silent reading, raise it for group projects.
- Turn the beep on only if students can’t see the board.
- Pair it with the visual classroom timer so a work block has both a time limit and a noise limit.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the microphone blocked on my school Chromebook?
- Many districts turn the microphone off on managed Chromebooks, and the browser then refuses access without asking. Ask your IT team to allow the microphone for this site, or use the manual traffic light, which needs no microphone.
- Is the sound recorded?
- No. The browser measures how loud the room is a few times per second, on this device. No audio is recorded, stored or sent anywhere.
- How do I set the right noise level?
- Start the meter during normal group work and watch where the bar sits. Drag Noise limit a little above that. Raise Sensitivity in a big quiet room, lower it in a small echoing one.
- Does the noise meter for classroom show decibels?
- No. It shows a relative level from 0 to 100, because laptop, iPad and Chromebook microphones are not calibrated. Set the Noise limit from what your class sounds like at a good working volume.
- Does it work on iPad and Safari?
- Yes. It works in current Safari on iPad, iPhone and Mac, as well as Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Allow the microphone when the browser asks.
- What if I don't want to use a microphone?
- Use the manual traffic light: tap Green, Yellow or Red to show the expected voice level on the board.
